She has partnered with The Sparrow Foundation to provide advocacy and peer support to survivors and is a vital speaker who delivers Trafficking Awareness training to stakeholders, including law enforcement, medical professionals, and service providers.
In 2017, Ms. Johnson was appointed by the Governor of Louisiana to the Human Trafficking Prevention Advisory Board and currently serves as Chair under her third appointment. In 2020, she was appointed to the Louisiana Survivor Advisory Council within the Governor’s Office of Human Trafficking Prevention to provide input on state-wide training materials, public messaging and awareness, and toolkits. In 2020, Governor Edwards awarded Ms. Johnson recognition for her unyielding courage, exemplary commitment to excellence, and dedicated service in investigating a human trafficking operation in North Louisiana. Governor Edwards again recognized Ms. Johnson for her demonstrated commitment, leadership, and advocacy on anti-human trafficking legislation during the 2022 Regular Session.
As a result of her advocacy efforts, Senate Bill 148 passed with bipartisan support and is known as the “Michelle Johnson Act,” which provides free expungements without a waiting period to survivors of human trafficking who committed non-violent crimes while trapped in The Life.
